LAS VEGAS - Senior Nick Amuchastegui and junior Ryan Mango remain in the brackets of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and will wrestle on Saturday, Dec. 3. The tournament, which is being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, is in its 30th year.
Amuchastegui, the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 174 pounds, won twice on Friday to remain in the championship bracket. The senior pinned Kyle Sweedman of North Idaho College in 1:21 in his first bout. He also recorded a 5-1 decision over Monte Shmaulhaus of Utah Valley. The Talent, Ore., native remains undefeated on the season at 10-0.
Mango started the day with a 13-5 major decision over Cal Baptist's Alex Annunciation. The junior dropped his second bout to Wyoming's Zach Zehner, 10-3. It was the first loss of the season for Mango. He bounced back in the consolation bracket with a 9-4 decision over Brock Livorio of North Carolina and a 3-2 decision over Shelton Mack of Pittsburgh.
Sophomore heavyweight Dan Scherer was 2-2 in the tournament. He opened with a 5-0 decision over Indiana's Jowan Gill. After falling to top-seeded Levi Cooper of Arizona State (5-0), Scherer posted a 3-0 decision against Paul Snyder of Hofstra. He ended the tournament with a 2-1 loss to West Virginia's Brandon Williamson.
Sophomore Alan Yen also posted a win in the tournament. The 197-pounder recorded an 8-1 decision over Arizona State's Chace Eskam in the first match of the consolation bracket.
Stanford's Donovan Halpin (141 pounds), Timmy Boone (149 pounds), Bret Baumbach (165 pounds) and Spence Patrick (184 pounds) all went 0-2 on Friday.
The tournament concludes on Saturday. The semifinals start at 10 a.m. PT, while the championship rounds begin at 3 p.m. PT.
