EVANSTON, Ill. - The Stanford wrestling team posted 11.5 team points on the first day of action at the 49th annual Midlands Championships, Thursday, at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill.
Junior Ryan Mango registered a 2-1 record on day one and remains alive in the tournament at 133 pounds. He registered a fall, his third of the season, over Joe Waltko of Clarion in 3:27 and a 5-2 decision against Geoffrey Alexander of Maryland. He leads the team with 15 wins so far this season.
Also posting wins for the Cardinal in the tournament were 125-pounder Evan Silver (2-2), 157-pounder Garrett Schaner (1-2), 165-pounder Bret Baumbach (2-2), 184-pounder Spence Patrick (1-2), 197-pounder Michael Sojka (1-2), 197-pounder Alan Yen (1-2) and heavyweight Dan Scherer (2-2).
One of Baumbach's wins came over Cardinal teammate Kyler Hasson, a 4-2 decision.
Mango will compete Friday in the wrestle-backs. The seventh-seed in the tournament, he will face the eighth seed, Oklahoma's Jordan Keller in his first bout.
