CHAPEL HILL, NC-- Patrick Johnson (13-1) combined with Michael Morin on a seven-hitter and lead No. 7-ranked North Carolina (49-14) to the series opening win of the Super Regional, 5-2 over No. 21-ranked Stanford (35-21) on Friday afternoon.

Johnson scattered five hits and allowed his first run since May 13, which included two post season starts, after 7.2 innings on Friday. He struck out seven and walked one. Loser Mark Appel (6-7) pitched into the seventh, giving up three runs, in what was a 1-0 game until the later innings.

UNC needs one more win to advance to its ninth College World Series. Stanford needs to win the next two.

Morin came on in the eighth and proceeded to give up a double to Stephen Piscotty and a two-run infield single by Brian Ragira, off the pitcher's mound, to cut the UNC lead to 3-2, ending Johnson's streak at 30.2 innings. A fly out ended the threat, as the Cardinal also threatened off of Johnson in the seventh in a 1-0 game.

Moen then secured his ninth save after the Tar Heels added two runs in the eighth.

In the proceeding inning, pinch hitter Dave Giuliani just missed erasing a 1-0 UNC lead, as his fly out to deep right center was tracked down by Ben Bunting from center field, stranding two runners on base. Seth Baldwin then connected in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homer to make it 3-0 off of Appel. Baldwin drove in three on the day.

Appel exited after the homer, giving up three runs on seven hits over six-plus innings.

Tyler Gaffney extended his hit streak to 21 games with an infield single in the eighth, forcing Johnson from the game. He came around to score on Ragira's single.

Piscotty made two errors over the first two innings at third, the second leading to a 1-0 lead in the second. Following a lead off single, Piscotty misplayed a potential double play ball, instead throwing it into right field and putting runners on the corners. An infield single by Bunting, the first of three hits, then made it 1-0.
