Wrestling Takes Out Southern Oregon, 25-3

STANFORD, Calif. - Recording its third consecutive victory, the 20th-ranked Stanford wrestling team picked up a 25-3 win over Southern Oregon, which is No. 2 in the NAIA rankings, Saturday, at the San Diego Sports Hall on the Stanford campus. The Cardinal moves to 8-5 overall, while the Raiders fall to 6-3 on the year.

The dual began at 157 pounds, where Stanford sophomore Garrett Schaner registered a 5-1 decision over Southern Oregon's Brock Crocker. Schaner, who won his third straight match, recorded a reversal in the second period, a takedown in the third and secured 2:37 of riding time in the win. He is now 8-8 overall and 5-4 in duals.

Stanford redshirt sophomore Bret Baumbach posted his season-best fourth consecutive victory with a 5-2 decision over Derek Mestrovich at 165 pounds. Trailing 2-1 going into the third period, Baumbach scored an escape and a takedown to go with 2:56 of riding time for the win. He is 7-8 overall and 4-2 in duals this season.

Top-ranked Nick Amuchastegui put the Cardinal ahead 10-0 in the dual with a 14-0 major decision over Brock Gutches at 174 pounds. Amuchastegui collected three takedowns, six near fall points and an escape to go with 2:30 of riding time. He remains undefeated at 15-0 overall and 12-0 in duals. He is now tied with former Cardinal All-American Steve Buddie for the fifth-most wins in program history with 109.

Junior Spence Patrick added to the Stanford lead with a 4-3 decision over Austin Vanderford at 184 pounds. Falling behind 2-1 after the first period, Patrick chose the down position to start the second. From there, he scored an escape and a takedown to hold a 4-2 advantage. Vanderford was limited to an escape in the third as Patrick sealed his season-best fifth straight win. He now stands at 14-9 overall and 10-3 in duals.

Sophomore Alan Yen kept the Raiders scoreless in the dual as he posted a 9-6 decision against Ethan Hinton at 197 pounds. He improved to 9-11 overall and 7-5 in duals this season. The win pushed the Stanford lead to 16-0 in the dual.

Sophomore heavyweight Dan Scherer kept the momentum in favor of the Cardinal with a 5-0 decision over Hank Turner. It marked the fifth-straight win for Scherer, who is now 18-8 overall and 11-2 in duals.

After both teams forfeited at 125 pounds, junior Ryan Mango, ranked No. 8 nationally, picked up a 13-6 decision over Mitchell Lofstedt at 133 pounds. Mango racked up four takedowns, three near falls points and a reversal in the win. He improves to 22-5 overall and a perfect 13-0 in duals. He leads the team with 55 duals points this season.

Southern Oregon scored its only points of the dual at 141 pounds. The Radiers' Kyle Wirkuty picked up a 5-3 overtime decision over Stanford freshman Alex Manley. The rookie falls to 1-6 in duals this season.

In the final bout of the afternoon, junior Timmy Boone registered a 5-0 decision against Jimmy Eggemeyer at 149 pounds. It marked the fifth win of the year for Boone, who is 5-7 in duals this season.

Stanford will remain on The Farm next weekend as it hosts Pac-12 foe Oregon State on Sunday, Jan. 29. The Cardinal and Beavers will meet at 2 p.m. in Maples Pavilion.
