STANFORD, Calif. - The 20th-ranked Stanford wrestling team dropped a 22-14 decision to No. 13 Oregon State, Sunday, in Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal drops to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-12, while the Beavers move to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
Stanford won four of the six bouts as senior Nick Amuchastegui and junior Ryan Mango remain undefeated in duals at 13-0 and 14-0, respectively.
The dual started at 157 pounds where Oregon State's RJ Pena, ranked 17th in the nation, posted an 8-2 decision over Garrett Schaner to give the Beavers a 3-0 lead. Schaner falls to 8-9 overall and 5-5 in duals this season.
Redshirt sophomore Bret Baumbach answered for the Cardinal with an 8-5 decision over Joe Latham at 165 pounds. Baumbach tallied three takedowns, an escape and 1:33 of riding time. It was the fifth straight win for Baumbach, a season-high, and he improves to 8-8 overall and 5-2 in duals.
With the dual tied 3-3, Amuchastegui, ranked No. 1 in the nation, registered a 19-3 technical fall over Cody Weishoff at 174 pounds. Giving the Cardinal five team points, Amuchastegui remains undefeated at 16-0 overall.
Junior 184-pounder Spence Patrick built on the Stanford lead with an exciting 6-4 victory over Ty Vinson in overtime. Trailing 2-0 in the third, Patrick secured two takedowns for a 4-3 advantage. However, Vinson had 1:12 of riding time to tie the bout score 4-4. In the overtime period, Patrick quickly scored a takedown with just nine seconds coming off the clock for the win. It was the sixth win in a row for Patrick, who improves to 15-9 overall and 11-3 in duals.
The Beavers cut the lead to 11-7 as 17th-ranked Taylor Meeks recorded a 14-1 major decision over Stanford sophomore Alan Yen at 197 pounds. Yen drops to 9-12 overall and 7-6 in duals for the Cardinal.
Sophomore heavyweight Dan Scherer had a five match winning streak snapped as fifth-ranked Clayton Jack posted a 3-1 decision. Scherer fell to 18-9 overall and 11-3 in duals as Oregon State cut the Stanford lead to 11-10.
Stanford pushed its lead back to 14-10 as Mango, wrestling for the first time this season at 125 pounds, tallied a 10-6 decision over OSU freshman Pat Rollins. Mango collected three takedowns, two near fall points and two escapes in the win. He moves to 23-5 overall this season.
The Beavers tied it up at 14-14 as James Roberts registered an 8-0 major decision over Stanford freshman Jordan Bryan. It was the first dual match of Bryan's career as he drops to 0-5 on the year.
OSU's Mike Mangrum, ranked fourth nationally at 141 pounds, broke the tie with a 16-6 major decision over Stanford freshman Alex Manley. The Beavers' Scott Sakaguchi, ranked No. 18, finished off the dual with a 9-1 major decision against Stanford junior Timmy Boone at 149 pounds.Up next, Stanford will host its final home dual of the season on Friday, Feb. 3 against Utah Valley. The Cardinal and the Wolverines will square off at 6:30 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion. Stanford will also travel to Tempe, Ariz., on Feb. 5 for a dual versus Arizona State.
