Feb. 11, 2012

Final Stats

STANFORD, Calif.-- No. 8-ranked Stanford (9-1) set two pool records and upset No. 1-ranked California (7-1) 174-126 in the season finale behind 11 wins.

Stanford opened up the meet with a pool record in the 200 medley relay (1:37.95) with Sam Woodward taking the lead in the fly and passing off to Maddy Schaefer who beat the Cal team in the freestyle by .13 seconds. The previous record stood since 2008 by the Stanford Cardinal (1:38.54).

Woodward later won the 100 fly with a time of 53.67, while Schaefer came close to another pool record in winning the 100 free (48.69), just .04 seconds off the 2008 standard.

Woodward, one of five seniors swimming in their final home meet, finished off a perfect home career at 23-0, as the Cardinal have not dropped a dual match at home since the last dual meet of 2006, a span of 32 in a row.

The second pool record fell three events later when Stanford's Felicia Lee touched the wall in the 100 back at 53.03, breaking Cal's Lauren Rogers; 2008 record of 53.17.

Stanford opened up the meet with five-straight wins to start the meet, leading 59-34 following freshman Katie Olsen's win in the 100 breast, before picking up three-straight to put he meet out of reach at 115-73, after Maya DiRado won the 200 back (1:56.18).

Diver Stephanie Phipps was the lone Cardinal to win two events, sweeping the 1- and 3-meter event.

Phipps picked up her first victory in the 3-meter, scoring two 8.5's on her fourth dive, a reverse 2 ½ somersault, en route to a score of 340.80, well ahead of Cal's Kahley Rowell by over 48 points (292.13). The next three spots were separated by .60 points with Cal's Molly Hayes (270.00) followed by Bear Kelsey Heiken (269.63) and Stanford's Sloane Brazina (269.40). She added a victory in the 1-meter to close out the day with a score of 298.43 over Hayes (286.43).

Cal set one pool record, and nearly had another one.  Caitlin Leverenz broke the final pool record in the 200 IM, with a  time of 1:55.90, the second of two wins for the Cal junior. Leverenz snapped Cardinal great Julia Smit's mark of 1:56.41 set in 2010.  Jensen won the 50 free with a time of 22.42, just .03 seconds behind her pool record set as a prep at Palo Alto High across the street in 2008.
