TEMPE, Ariz. - The ninth-ranked Stanford softball team posted two wins on the second day of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Cardinal improved to 3-1 overall as it defeated Portland State, 7-0, and Texas Tech, 7-1.

Junior pitcher Teagan Gerhart improved to 3-1 overall, picking up both wins in the circle, Saturday. The Norco, Calif., native racked up 13 strikeouts in 11 total innings of work. Rookie pitcher Nyree White also saw time in the circle in both games, striking out two batters in three innings.

Against Portland State, freshman Hanna Winter got things started for Stanford with an infield base hit. The rookie then stole second to move into scoring position. She was brought home on a triple by senior Ashley Hansen, which gave Stanford the 1-0 lead after the first inning.

Stanford threatened again in the second as seniors Maya Burns and Jenna Becerra each registered a single up the middle to put two on for the Cardinal with two outs. However, a groundout by senior Sarah Hassman ended the top-half of the inning with the score still 1-0. In the bottom of the second, the Vikings loaded the bases with no outs putting Gerhart in a jam. The junior remained calm, striking out the next three batters to end the inning.

Sophomore Corey Hanewich led off the top of the fourth with a stand-up double. She advanced to third on a groundout by freshman Leah White and then scored on a single through the right side by Burns. After a single to left field by Becerra, Winter brought Burns home on another single to left to push the Cardinal lead to 3-0.

Stanford added another run in the top of the fifth as White hit an RBI double to score junior Jenna Rich from second. It was the first extra-base hit of the season for the rookie.

The Cardinal sealed the game in the top of the seventh with three more runs. White tallied another RBI on an infield single, while Burns drove in two more with a single up the middle.

In the second game of the double-header, Stanford scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead over Texas Tech. Hassman, the lead-off hitter, was hit by a pitch and then stole second. A double by sophomore designated player Danielle Miller scored Hassman. Miller was then brought home on a single to centerfield by Rich.

The Red Raiders got on the board in the top of the second on a solo home run by centerfielder Mikey Kenney.

Stanford extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth to 5-1. Rich led off with a single through the left side and then Hanewich was hit by a pitch. White then reached on an infield single to load the bases. Becerra brought home Rich and Hanewich with a double to deep left center field. White then scored as Hassman grounded out to second base.

The Cardinal tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth as right fielder Caitlyn Pura hit a stand-up double to lead off the inning. White then blasted a two-run shot to left center to push the Stanford lead to 7-1.

Stanford wraps up the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 12 against UC Santa Barbara. The Cardinal and Gauchos will meet at 11:30 a.m. MT at the Tempe Sports Complex.
