STANFORD, Calif.- No. 9 Stanford dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 33 Fresno State on Tuesday afternoon at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Despite winning the doubles point, Stanford (6-3, 0-0 Pac-12) was unable to close out the match as Fresno State (6-1, 1-0 WAC) rallied to secure four singles victories.
The Bulldogs eventually clinched the match at the No. 1 spot, as No. 14 Remi Boutillier edged No. 37 Ryan Thacher 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
Stanford was playing without the services of lineup regulars Bradley Klahn and Denis Lin. Klahn, Stanford's two-time All-American who has yet to play a singles match, made his season debut in doubles and teamed up with Thacher for an 8-3 win.
The Cardinal claimed the doubles point, sweeping all three matches to move in front 1-0.
Rookies John Morrissey and Robert Stineman won their matches on courts three and four, respectively, to account for Stanford's other two points.
Stanford now shifts its attention to this weekend's National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. The Cardinal will open play against No. 7 Baylor.
