STANFORD, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford women's water polo went green Saturday, traveling to and from its game at Santa Clara via Caltrain and claiming a 13-4 victory in between rides.
The Cardinal (8-0) was joined by family, friends and fans on the trip, in which seven players netted goals. Stanford now turns its attention to next weekend's UCI Invitational, set for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25-26 at UC Irvine.
Catherine Carpenter, Cassie Churnside, Cory Dodson, Alyssa Lo and Kiley Neushul each scored twice in the win, while Monica Coughlan, Ashley Grossman and Kaitlyn Lo each added a goal.
Freshman goalie Emily Dorst made her first collegiate start, going the distance and stopping six shots.
Carpenter opened the contest with two quick goals as the Cardinal blitzed the Broncos for six first-period scores. Each team netted just once in the second frame, yet the Cardinal still held the upper hand with a 7-2 lead.
Dorst and the Cardinal held firm in the second half, limiting the Bronco opportunities while the Stanford offense found the net three times in the third frame to put the game away.
Three more goals in the fourth period widened the cushion and the Cardinal was able to cruise to its eighth straight win to open the season.
Following a postgame meal with family and friends, the Cardinal walked across El Camino Real to the Santa Clara Caltrain station to catch the 5:05 p.m. train back to Palo Alto.
