STANFORD, Calif. - The eighth-ranked Stanford softball team shut out Bradley, 3-0, Sunday, in the championships of the Stanford Nike Invitational at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal improved to 8-3 overall, while the Braves drop to 4-6.
Junior pitcher Teagan Gerhart threw her first complete-game shutout of the season. She tallied three strikeouts, while allowing just two hits and one walk. She moves to 8-1 overall on the year. Bradley pitcher Madeline Lynch-Crumrine took the loss, falling to 2-4.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first four innings. The Cardinal broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded, junior Jenna Rich singled to left field to score right fielder Corey Hanewich. Senior Ashley Hansen, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored the second run of the inning as senior Jenna Becerra drew a walk with the bases still loaded.
Stanford scored its final run of the game in the sixth as freshman Leah White hit an RBI single up the middle to scored Hanewich from third.
Up next, Stanford travels to Cathedral City, Calif., for the Cathedral City Classic, Feb. 24-26. The Cardinal will face Long Island, No. 4 Oklahoma, Long Beach State, New Mexico State and San Diego State next weekend.
