Piscotty Wins it with 2-Run Homer in 11th

STOCKTON, Calif.-- Stephen Piscotty hit a two-run homer in the top of 11th leading No. 2-ranked Stanford (4-0) to a 9-7 win over host Pacific (0-4) after trailing by four early and surrendering the tying run in the bottom of the ninth.

John Haberman tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single, after freshman David Schmidt (1-0) blew the save after the bullpen held Pacific scoreless for four innings following a 4-0 Pacific lead after two.

Schmidt instead got the win with 2.2 innings out of the pen, as Sam Lindquist came on in the bottom of the 11th for his first career save. John Prato Matthews (0-2) took the loss with the final 4.0 innings.

Tyler Gaffney reached base safely five times, going 3-for-4 with two hit by pitches and three runs, while Piscotty drove in three.

Fighting off its second 4-0 deficit in as many games Stanford erased a second-inning deficit with seven unanswered runs to lead 7-4 after six.

Gaffney broke up the shutout in the third with an RBI single and then was a part of a four-run fifth to lead 5-4. After back-to-back singles by Gaffney and Piscotty made it 4-3, a balk and passed ball gave Stanford the lead.

Dean McArdle was in line for the win after 3.2 shutout innings after starter Elliott Byers gave up four in the second. The junior righthander pitched 3.2 shutout innings as Stanford built a 6-4 lead after five and a half innings. McArdle struck out four and scattered four hits.

Kyle Crawford exited after five innings for the Tigers, giving up five runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Byers in his first career start gave up four runs on three hits and was forced to exit with one out in the second after Pacific took a 4-0 lead. McArdle came on and got the final two outs of the inning and pitched into the sixth.

NOTES:Stanford trailed 4-0 on Sunday against Vanderbilt in the second, before scoring eight in the bottom of the second en route to an 18-5 win.... It was Byers first career start in his third season... Brett Michael Doran made his first start at second of the season. It was also his first career start in the field after five starts at DH as a freshman... Stanford returns home to host Texas this weekend with games on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
