FEDERAL WAY, Wash.-- Cal twice beat Stanford in head-to-head competition to start off the Pac-12 Conference Championships with the Golden Bears winning the 200 medley and 800 free relays on Wednesday night.
In the 200 medley, Cal finished with a time of 1:36.77, as Liv Jensen touched the wall ahead of Betsy Webb and the Cardinal at 1:36.90. Cindy Tran bolted out to the early lead in the backstroke, leading Felicia Lee by .27 seconds. Stanford freshman Katie Olsen took the lead away in the breaststroke by .23 seconds before Colleen Fotsch caught up to Sam Woodward in the butterfly as the teams were tied headed into the final freestyle.
In the 800 Free Relay, Cal again edged its cross bay rivals with a time of 6:57.86 ahead of Stanford's time of 6:58.82. Sara Isakovic gave the Bears the initial lead of just over two and a half seconds as the Cardinal could not catch up, pulling within a second following Maya DiRado's leg and even closer with Sara Giberson. Jensen though held off Andi Murez for the win.
The Pac-12 Championships continue through Saturday. Stanford is the two-time defending champion. Cal is the defending NCAA champion.
