Stanford Tops Long Beach State for Fifth Straight Victory

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The 14th-ranked Stanford softball team defeated Long Beach State, 3-0, Saturday at the Cathedral City Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Cardinal moves to 11-3 overall, while the 49ers dropped to 6-7.

Junior pitcher Teagan Gerhart picked up her 11th win in the circle. She threw 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Freshman Nyree White entered the game in relief in the seventh, picking up her first career save.

Rookies Hanna Winter and Leah White led the Cardinal offensively as each posted two hits and an RBI. Senior Ashley Hansen recorded an RBI single.

Stanford took an early 1-0 advantage over Long Beach State in the top of the first. Winter led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a single to left field by Leah White. Hansen drove in Winter with a single through the right side. The Cardinal managed to load the bases, but stranded all three runners to end the inning.

After four scoreless innings, Stanford tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior catcher Maya Burns hit a double to left field with one out. Centerfielder Caitlyn Pura singled to right field to put two one for Stanford. Freshman Tylyn Wells entered the game to run for Burns at second. She scored on a single by Winter. Leah White then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Pura.

Nyree White closed out the game for the Cardinal, fielding a bunt against the first batter the faced and striking out the second. Freshman first baseman Erin Ashby recorded the final out for Stanford.

Stanford wraps-up the Cathedral City Classic on Sunday, Feb. 26 versus New Mexico State and San Diego State. The Cardinal faces the Aggies at 11 a.m. PT and the Aztecs at 1 p.m. PT.
