Wrestling Drops Final Home Dual of the Year to Utah Valley

STANFORD, Calif. - The 16th-ranked Stanford wrestling team fell, 25-10, to Utah Valley, Friday in the final home dual of the year at Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal drops to 8-7 overall, while the Wolverines improved to 5-7.

The dual started at 125 pounds, where the Cardinal was forced to forfeit. The Wolverines took a 10-0 lead in the match as Blake Mangum recorded an 11-3 major decision over Stanford freshman Jordan Bryan at 133 pounds.

Utah Valley extended its lead to 13-0 in the dual as Avery Garner posted an 8-2 decision over Stanford freshman Alex Manley at 141 pounds. Manley falls to 2-12 on the year and 1-8 in duals.

The Cardinal still remained scoreless in the dual after 12th-ranked Josh Wilson registered a 9-4 decision over Stanford junior Timmy Boone at 149 pounds. Boone drops to 5-11 on the season.

Sophomore Garrett Schaner scored Stanford's first points of the dual with a 7-1 decision over Napoleon Aniciete at 157 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Schaner secured riding time in the second period. He then chose to start on bottom in the third and tallied an escape, a takedown and three near fall points for the win. He improves to 9-9 overall and 6-5 in duals this season.

At 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore Bret Baumbach had his five-match winning streak snapped as he dropped a 2-1 decision to Ethan Smith. Leading 1-0 going into the third period, Smith scored a reversal in the third to secure the win. Baumbach falls to 5-3 in duals this season.

Amuchastegui, wrestling in the final home match of his career, posted a 12-4 major decision over Monte Schmalhaus at 174 pounds. Ranked No. 1 in the nation, Amuchastegui improved to 17-0 overall and 14-0 in duals this season. The victory was the 111th of his career, moving him past former Cardinal All-American Zack Giesen for fourth place on Stanford's career wins list.

Junior Spence Patrick cut into the Utah Valley lead with a 3-0 decision over David Prieto at 184 pounds. He scored an escape and was awarded a stalling point in the second period. He then rode Prieto out to securing riding time and the win. It marked the seventh straight win for Patrick, a season-high, as he moved to 16-9 overall and 12-3 in duals.

The Cardinal dropped the final two bouts as sophomore Alan Yen fell in a 6-4 decision to Brian Chamberlain at 197 pounds and freshman Brendan Ter Wee, wrestling in his first collegiate dual, dropped a 4-2 decision to Dustin Dennison. Yen is now 9-13 overall and 7-7 in duals this season, while Ter Wee is 0-3 overall.

Following the dual, redshirt junior Kyler Hasson won an exhibition match, 12-8, in the final home dual of his career. He, along with redshirt junior Matt Sencenbaugh, is competing in his final season with the Cardinal.

Stanford will travel to Tempe, Ariz., on Feb. 5 for its final dual of the season versus Arizona State. The Cardinal will then have three weeks to prepare of the Pac-12 Championships, held in Boise, Id., on Feb. 26.
