SAN FRANCISCO - Stanford rookies Michael Sojka and Evan Silver, wrestling unattached, placed third and fourth at the California Collegiate Open, Saturday, in San Francisco, Calif.
Sojka went 4-1 in the tournament at 197 pounds to improve to 6-7 overall this season. He posted an 11-1 major decision over Thomas Martin of San Francisco State to open the day. After recording a 7-2 decision over Matthew Lewellen of Palomar College, Sojka dropped into the consolation bracket with a 6-2 loss to Boise State's Brent Chriswell. The rookie bounced back with a major decision and a fall in 4:24 to capture third place.
Silver, who was 3-2 on the day, recorded a 15-4 major decision over Sergio Valdez of San Francisco State at 125 pounds. After scoring a 7-2 decision against Boise State's Landon Hartley, Silver fell to CSU Bakersfield's Tyler Iwamura 4-0. In the consolation bracket, he posted a fall in 2:30 over Cal Poly's Michael Clemmenson before dropping the third-place match to Miguel Comparan of CSU Bakersfield, 3-1.
Donovan Halpin, Matt Schneider and Kyler Hasson all posted wins on the day for Stanford. Unfortunately, both Halpin and Hasson had to forfeit matches due to injury and could not complete the tournament.
Stanford will close out the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 5 at Arizona State. The Cardinal and Sun Devils will face off at 12 p.m. MT in Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
