ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Stanford senior Nick Amuchastegui dropped a 13-2 major decision in the 174-pound finals at the 2012 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Saturday, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Amuchastegui, the three seed, fell to top-seeded Ed Ruth of Penn State. He scored his two points on a reversal in the first period. It is the first and only loss of the season for Amuchastegui, who finishes 24-1.
He ends his career at Stanford with a 118-19 overall record and his 18 pins are tied for the eighth-most in school history. Amuchastegui is the only Cardinal wrestler to reach the NCAA finals on two occasions and joins Tanner Gardner as the only three-time All-Americans in program history. He finished fourth at 165 pounds in 2010 and was the runner-up at 174 pounds in 2011.
Amuchastegui's 24 consecutive wins this season marks the second-longest streak by a Cardinal wrestler, while his 118 career wins ranks fourth-best.
