Stanford Excels at the Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas - The Cardinal track and field teams continued from the Texas relays on Friday with some more top marks. Kori Carter nearly broke her own school record in the sprint hurdles, while the men's distance crew won the metric mile relay.

Carter just missed her own school record in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 13.15. She holds the Stanford record at 13.13, but will have another chance in the final. Carter won her heat and is the top seed heading into Saturday's final.

Katie Nelms also competed in the event and was 13th overall in a career-best time of 13.47. The time now only trails Carter in school history.

The Cardinal women ran well in the 4x100-meter relay, qualifying for the final with a time of 45.02. The time was the 10th-fastest in school history and good enough to win its heat. The Cardinal team of Shataya Hendricks, Carissa Levingston, Angela Gradiska and Carter will run the final on Saturday.

Hendricks also fared well in the open 100 meters, running a time of 11.60. She was fifth in her heat and 16th overall, but just missed the final. Levingston and Gradiska also ran the 100, finishing with times of 11.87 and 12.16, respectively.

Stanford also ran the 4x400-meter relay, but did not make the final. The team of Joy O'Hare, Levingston, Kellie Schueler and Arantxa King finished with a time of 3:41.87 and placed 17th.

Many of the same participants combined in the sprint medley relay with Stanford taking ninth. The team of Hendricks, Nelms, Schueler and O'Hare ran a time of 3:58.49.

Brianna Bain led the Cardinal in the field, placing second in the javelin with a toss of 162-9. The toss was just off her season best of 164-9.

In the high jump, Elaine Patten and Adrienne Johnson each cleared 5-7, but Patten placed tied for fifth, while Johnson was tied for 12th based on misses.

In the shot put ring, Rebecca Hammar placed fifth in the `B' Section with a toss of 48-9.

Finally, Katherine Zingheim and Ellie McCardwell competed in the pole vault. Zingheim was 11th with a clearance of 12-7 ½, while McCardwell was 16th, clearing 12-1 ½.

The Cardinal men showed off its middle-distance depth in the 4x1,500-meter relay. The team of Jim Rosa, Joe Rosa, Erik Olson and Chris Derrick won the event with a time of 15:20.09. Derrick outkicked Henry Lelei of Texas A&M on the final leg to win by less than a second.

In the 4x100-meter relay, the Cardinal men placed fifth in its heat and 17th overall with a time of 41.33. The team of Darian Brooks, Amaechi Morton, Colin Hepburn and Spencer Chase did not qualify for the final.

In the open events, Morton led the Cardinal, taking second in his heat and qualifying for the final in the 110-meter hurdles. Morton ran a career-best time of 14.07, which ranks fourth in Stanford history.

Chase and Brooks also ran the open 100 meters, finishing with times of 10.76 and 10.96, respectively.

In the field, Dartis Willis II led Stanford, finishing second in the `B' section of the high jump. Willis II cleared 6-11 ¾ to earn his collegiate best. Geoffrey Tabor placed fifth in the B Section of the shot put with a heave of 52-5 ¼.

The Cardinal will be back in action on Saturday for the conclusion of the Texas Relays. In addition, a group will be in Fresno to compete in the Fresno Invitational.
