No. 2 Stanford Sweeps Weekend With 12-4 Win Over San Diego State

April 1, 2012

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford women's water polo wrapped up a home weekend sweep Sunday with a 12-4 win over No. 8 San Diego State at Avery Aquatic Center.

The Cardinal (18-1, 4-0 MPSF) captured its seventh straight win, and will remain home for its next two contests. Stanford will host No. 3 USC at Avery next Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m. before the home finale on April 14 against No. 5 California.

Cassie Churnside and Kiley Neushul each posted a hat trick in Sunday's win, while Jillian Garton and Ashley Grossman scored two goals apiece. Alyssa Lo and Pallavi Menon accounted for the remaining two goals.

Both Cardinal goalies saw action in the contest, with junior Kate Baldoni making seven saves before freshman Emily Dorst took over for the final five minutes and stopped a pair of shots.

The Stanford defense dominated the contest, limiting the Aztecs to just a goal in each period while the Cardinal offense racked up three goals in each of the first two frames.

Behind the goalkeeping of Baldoni and Dorst, as well as the field defense of players such as Kaley Dodson, the Cardinal defense put the Aztecs on lockdown. While the defense did its job, the Stanford offense added four more goals in the third period to take a commanding 10-3 lead.

With the score 11-3 and just over five minutes remaining, Dorst came on for Baldoni. The freshman stopped a pair of shots over the final minutes, as the teams traded goals and the Cardinal wrapped up the win.
