Anna Kim Leads Stanford Past San Diego State

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford mounted a furious comeback, closing with the final eight goals to defeat San Diego State 17-11 on Sunday afternoon at Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal trailed at the half and 11-8 well into the second half, before the rally.

Anna Kim spearheaded Stanford's rally, scoring four times in just her second game back after missing most of the season with an injury. Kim's four goals all came in the final 15 minutes of the game as Stanford closed with an 8-0 run.

Stanford led 6-2 in the first half, but the Aztecs came all the way back to take a 7-6 lead heading to the break. The freshmen led Stanford in the first half, scoring five of the six goals. Kyle Fraser scored twice, but Stanford still went to the break trailing.

The Aztecs continued its strong play into the second half, building a three-goal lead. Emily Newstrom scored one of her four goals early in the half, but San Diego State responded pushing the lead to 11-8 with 18:44 to play.

From there, Stanford took over scoring eight times in the final 15:01.Kim got things started with two quick goals, before Emilie Boeri tied the game at the 11:30 mark. Kim then scored again to give Stanford the lead it would not relinquish.

Boeri added a second goal, Newstrom scored twice, Kim once and Rachel Hinds added a goal to finish the scoring stretch.

The Cardinal dominated the second half after the slow start, outshooting the Aztecs, 18-6. For the game, Stanford totaled 33 shots against 21 for San Diego State.

Lyndsey Munoz was outstanding in goal, marking seven saves and keeping the Cardinal close before the offense took over.

The win evens Stanford's MPSF record at 2-2 as the Cardinal are 4-8 overall. Stanford currently sits in fourth place in the conference and it will need to stay in the top four to guarantee a spot in the MPSF tournament.

Stanford will be back in action this week when it travels to UC Davis and California for conference games. The Cardinal faces UC Davis on Wednesday, April 18, at 7 p.m. and Cal on Friday, April 20, at 5 p.m. Stanford returns home next Sunday, April 15, at 1 p.m., when it takes on Saint Mary's in the regular season finale.
