STANFORD, Calif.-- Michael Gerlach's two-out single in the top of the eighth led visiting San Jose State (18-14) to a 3-2 win over No. 10-ranked Stanford (22-10) on Tuesday evening.
After reliever David Schmidt intentionally walked .321 hitter, Kalei Contrades, for.149 hitter Gerlach, Gerlach singled to center give SJSU a 3-2 lead. Loser Garrett Hughes (1-1) after a perfect seventh, got a groundout followed by two walks to set up the eighth.
Contrades (1-1), the starting designated hitter, pitched a scoreless seventh for the win, before Zach Jones converted the two-inning save. Jones picked up his seventh save, the last of seven pitchers for the Spartans, combining on a five-hitter.
Alex Blandino's third blast of the season, a two-run shot off the light pole, gave Stanford a 2-0 lead in the third.
Starter John Hochstatter reached the fifth, pitching four scoreless innings, before the Spartans struck for two. Hochstatter had a one-hitter through four, before exiting after back-to-back hits to start the fifth. A sacrifice fly and RBI single tied it at 2-2 against reliever Dean McArdle.
NOTES: Dean McArdle was hit with a ball by Nick Schulz and left the game on the infield single in the sixth... With defensive switches late in the game, Brian Ragira played his first collegiate game in left. He was a prep outfielder before being converted to the infield... Stephen Piscotty started his first game in left since he started 28 games in left as a freshman... Stanford hosts Arizona State this weekend, Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
