April 28, 2012

Box Score

WESTWOOD, Calif.-- No. 10-ranked UCLA (28-11, 12-8 Pac-12) scored four runs in the first and evened the series with No. 9-ranked Stanford (27-11, 9-8 Pac-12) 7-4 on Saturday afternoon.

With two outs, closer Scott Griggs walked three-straight, before striking out Alex Blandino to secure his ninth save of the year.

Austin Wilson and Danny Diekroeger hit back-to-back homers in the sixth to chase Nick Vander Tuig (5-3) from the game, after the righthander gave up four runs on six hits over 5.2 innings.

UCLA's David Berg and Ryan Deeter then combined for 2.1 scoreless innings, before Griggs pitched the ninth. Stanford had base runners in every inning but the second, leaving nine on base.

Loser Brett Mooneyham (5-4) was removed from the game after 4.0-plus innings, walking four and hitting another three, as he gave up six runs on four hits.

Mooneyham's wildness in the first led to four runs, as he walked three, hit a Bruin and had a wild pitch to erase an early 2-0 led by the Cardinal. The lefthander walked and hit another in the fifth, as UCLA added two more runs to lead 6-2.

A two-run double by Brian Ragira gave Stanford an early 2-0 lead. He also had two RBIs last night.

NOTES: Tyler Gaffney threw out a runner at the plate in the seventh, after a potential sacrifice fly was snuffed out... Brett Michael Doran was robbed twice of hit by good defensive efforts, once by center fielder Beau Amaral who tracked down a ball in the alley in the first and another on a high chopper in the hole by shortstop Pat Valaika... Eric Smith will be featured on the sports casts for NBC Bay Area and Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area this Sunday and Monday nights... Sunday's game is at 1 p.m., before Stanford travels to San Jose State to play at their on-campus facility on Tuesday at 2 p.m... The Cardinal are at Oregon State next weekend.
