OJAI, Calif.- Nicole Gibbs collected her second career singles title, defeating California's Anett Schutting 6-0, 6-2 on Sunday afternoon in the final at the Pac-12 Championships.
Seeded No. 1 in the tourney draw and ranked No. 3 in the nation, Gibbs became the second consecutive Stanford player to claim the singles title, following Kristie Ahn in 2011.
After requiring three sets to win her opening-round match on Thursday, Gibbs lost just four games over her final four matches en route to the title. Three of her five victories came against Golden Bear opponents.
Gibbs, who also claimed the ITA Northwest Regional Championships singles crown, has now won seven matches in a row and is 31-5 overall and 17-2 in duals.
There was also a possibility for Gibbs to become the first Stanford player to capture both conference titles since Marissa Irvin accomplished the feat in 1999.
However, Gibbs and Mallory Burdette dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to USC's Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria in the doubles final. The Women of Troy have now won the conference doubles title in three of the last five years.
Stanford is back in action May 11-13, when the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championships get underway.
