AUSTIN, Texas -- The Cardinal completed competition and the NCAA Preliminary Rounds with several more athletes advancing to the finals. Again, it was the women's sprinters leading the way as the Cardinal team that will go to nationals in Des Moines in two weeks was completed.
The Cardinal women continued to excel in the sprints and hurdles as Katie Nelms and Kori Carter each advanced to the NCAAs in a second event. Nelms placed fifth overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time of 13.06. Carter was not far off, placing 10th with a wind-aided time of 13.22.
Also advancing to the NCAA meet in a second event was Shataya Hendricks who placed 10th overall in the 200 meters. Hendricks ran a wind-aided time of 23.41 earn a spot at Des Moines.
In the relays, Stanford advanced in the 4x100 meters. The Cardinal placed fifth with a time of 44.27 with a team of Hendricks, Carissa Levingston, Nelms and Carter.
In the 4x400 meters, Stanford placed 14th and will not advance. Kellie Schueler, Carissa Levingston, Joy O'Hare and Justine Fedronic ran a time of 3:38.53, but it was not quite enough.
In the distances, Stanford was led by Kathy Kroeger who won her heat of the 5,000 meters. Kroeger was second overall with a time of 16:16.07 in an event she has been an All-American each of the last two seasons.
Aisling Cuffe (17:07.32) and Jessica Tonn (17:19.37) also competed in the event, but neither will advance.
In the field, Arantxa King led the way as she moved on to the NCAA finals in a second event. The senior placed ninth with a mark of 42-0 ¾. Karynn Dunn also competed in the event, but will not advance after a mark of 41-3.
Finally, Alli Billmeyer competed in the 1,500 meters, but will not advance after running a time of 4:32.97.
The Cardinal men were led by the field event athletes, beginning with Geoffrey Tabor who placed seventh in the discus. Tabor backed up a disappointing Pac-12 meet by advancing to the NCAAs with a toss of 188-7.
Also advancing was Dartis Willis in the high jump. The freshman placed ninth in the high jump with a season-best clearance of 7-1 ½. Jules Sharpe also competed in the event, but will not advance after clearing 6-11 ¾.
On the track, Stanford was led by Brendan Gregg who advanced in the 5,000 meters. Gregg ran 14:11.16 to place 11th overall and now will run the both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the NCAA meet. Miles Unterreiner and Joe Rosa also competed in the event, but neither will advance.
In the 1,500 meters, Tyler Stutzman and Michael Atchoo both competed, but neither will advance. Stutzman ran 3:50.08 and Atchoo 3:50.28, but they each finished just out of the top 12.
Saturday completed the NCAA Preliminary Rounds. The Cardinal will next competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 6-9.
