WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Stanford women's rowing's I and II Eights took to the waters of Lake Mercer at the NCAA Championships Saturday, falling just short of their respective Grand Finals with fifth-place semifinal finishes.

Both boats will compete in their respective Petite Final Sunday, while the Four will row in the Third Final. The Four will face off with Brown, Michigan State and USC for places 13-16 at 6:50 a.m. PT. The II Eight will row against Brown, USC, Washington, Wisconsin and Yale for places 7-12 at 7:55 a.m. PT, and the I Eight will take on Cornell, Harvard, Ohio State, UCLA and Yale for places 7-12 at 8:45 a.m. PT.

Saturday, the I Eight was on the water first for Stanford. Needing a top-three finish to advance to the Grand Final, the Cardinal found itself in a competitive race in which the top five boats were separated by nine seconds. The Cardinal boat would cross the line fifth, two spots out of a Grand Final berth, in a time of 6:22.67, just over three seconds behind California, which finished third.

The II Eight, up next, would also find itself on the outside looking in after 2,000 meters. The Cardinal boat would clock a 6:37.99 in its race, but that time fell just under three seconds shy of third-place UCLA, which grabbed the final semifinal spot.
