Stanford Shuts Out Washington, Takes Game One

STANFORD, Calif. - The 19th-ranked Stanford softball team shut out No. 14 Washington, 4-0, Friday, at Smith Family Stadium to take game one of the three-game series. The Cardinal improves to 34-16 overall and 7-12 in the Pac-12, while the Huskies fall to 36-15 and 7-14 in the conference.

Junior pitcher Teagan Gerhart posted her seventh shutout of the season, improving to 29-10 in the circle. Washington's Kaitlin Inglesby took the loss, dropping to 18-10.

Both teams played solid defense as Washington had 11 runners left on base, while Stanford left eight.

Offensively, senior Ashley Hansen was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while freshman Cassandra Roulund was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Alyssa Lombardo registered her first career hit with a bunt single in the sixth inning.

Stanford took a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the fourth. Hansen led off the inning with a single to left field and then junior Jenna Rich was hit by a pitch. Roulund singled up the middle, scoring Hansen from second and moving Rich to third. Senior Jenna Becerra recorded the second RBI of the inning as she grounded out to second base, plating Rich. Sophomore Corey Hanewich then singled to right center to bring home Roulund.

The Cardinal tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, freshman Hanna Winter reached on a fielder's choice to score Becerra.

Stanford and Washington will continue the series on Saturday, May 5. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Smith Family Stadium.
