DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Cardinal continued with the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday with day two from Drake Stadium. Karynn Dunn led the Cardinal as the women widened their lead to eight points with six of 21 events scored.
Dunn placed fifth in the long jump after a career-best leap of 21-6. The mark scored four team points for Stanford and pushed the team total to 22. The Cardinal leads the second-place tie between Oklahoma and Kansas by eight points as each have 14 points. With 15 events still to be scored, Stanford still has a long ways to go as it attempts to secure a high team finish.
The leap for Dunn was fourth-best in school history as she will earn the second All-America honor of the season after also scoring in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Arantxa King also competed in the long jump, but was not at her best, finishing out the top nine that advanced to the final. King had a best jump of 20-3 and placed 17th overall.
On the track, the Cardinal women were led by Katie Nelms in the 100-meter hurdles. Nelms ran a personal best of 13.00 to place second in her heat and advance to the final. The time was just an hundredth of a second off the school record of Kori Carter. Carter also competed in the event, but did not advance after running a time of 13.18 to place 18th overall.
In the 200 meters, Shataya Hendricks ran the third and final heat, but placed sixth and did not advance. The senior ran a time of 23.71, which was off her personal best. Still, a great season for Hendricks who qualified through the NCAA meet in both the 100 and 200 meters.
The men were led by Benjamin Johnson who advanced to the final of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Johnson ran a time of 8:41.61 to place sixth in his heat and advance with the 10th-fastest time. Johnson will run the final on Saturday as he attempts to improve on his seventh-place finish of a year ago.
Finally, Dartis Willis II competed in the high jump for the Stanford men, placing tied for 17th after clearing 7-0 ½. The freshman was competing in his first NCAA meet.
Stanford will be back on the track on Friday for day three of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, but have just two competitors. The highlight of the day will be Amaechi Morton looking to capture the NCAA title in the 400-meter hurdles. In addition, Brendan Gregg will run the 5,000 meters after running the 10,000 just 48 hours earlier.
