STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Bonnie Samuelson hit seven 3-pointers and scored 27 points to lead six Stanford players scoring in double figures Thursday night as the fourth-ranked Cardinal defeated Corban University, 117-33.
The Huntington Beach native went 7-for-12 from behind the arc as the Cardinal shot 56.0 percent (14-for-25) as a team from downtown. Junior guard Sara James hit four of her nine attempts, going for 24 points while 2012 Pac-12 All-Freshman Team honorable mention Taylor Greenfield was 2-of-3 and netted 12 points in the win.
Associated Press Preseason All-American Chiney Ogwumike went 6-of-10 from the field, scoring 12 points with seven rebounds over 15 minutes of work. Ogwumike, the reigning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, made a pair of steals and blocked a shot in a fine two-way effort.
Joslyn Tinkle's layup 1:32 into the contest opened the scoring as well the gates for the Cardinal offense, which went up by scores of 18-2, 32-4 and 63-7 before Corban reached double digits with 2:08 left in the half. Stanford's defense played a large role in the Warriors' scoring troubles, holding Corban to 17.4-percent shooting (4-for-23) in the half.
Amber Orrange, a Pac-12 All-Freshman Team honorable mention last season, masterfully orchestrated the Cardinal offense, passing out seven assists in addition to her 10 points scored. She also showed her defensive chops, creating turnovers in the back court and making eight steals overall.
All five Cardinal starters scored over a 31-0 run that spanned the 11:16 to the 2:28 marks in the opening half to put Stanford ahead 63-7. After Julia Young's 3-pointer got Corban into double digits, Samuelson accounted for the half's final five points to put the Cardinal up 68-10 at the break.
The Warriors hung well with the Cardinal as the second half got underway, with Young, Alison Evans and Megan Benedict hitting 3-pointers over the first 6:02. Young, who scored a team-leading 11 points Thursday, added a layup with 12:47 remaining to give Corban a 14-13 edge in second-half scoring.
Samuelson's hot hand, however, would reignite the Cardinal offense, as the sophomore gunner scored the team's next 11 points, with Corban's only answer a 3-pointer from Benedict, to go up 93-27.
Stanford's freshmen saw their first action in a Cardinal uniform Thursday to highlight the exhibition. Cardinal fans got their first looks at center Tess Picknell and guards Denia Ebersole and Kiran Lakhian and came away impressed. The 6-5 Picknell blocked a pair of shots and grabbed eight rebounds in 20 minutes while Lakhian drilled her only 3-point attempt and Ebersole grabbed a board and hit a free throw in eight minutes of action.
Stanford hosts Vanguard University Saturday at 2 p.m. in its final tuneup for the 2012-13 regular season, which tips off next Friday night at Maples Pavilion as the Cardinal hosts Fresno State at 7 p.m.
