REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - No. 12 Stanford women's rowing dropped four races to No. 1 California at The Big Row at Redwood Shores Saturday.
The Cardinal will return to action in two weeks at the Pac-12 Championships in Gold River, Calif. on Sunday, May 13.
"Cal is consistent, and this was a very good gauge for us," said women's rowing head coach Yasmin Farooq. "Positive steps were made in all four lineups today that will be beneficial for Pac-12's. The team understands what they need to do in the next two weeks and they are extremely capable. We're in the hunt and the Pac-12 Championship is going to be one of the most exciting conference championships to watch."
The Cardinal I and II Eights were edged by their California counterparts in a couple of close duels. In the I Eight race, both boats charged off the line with California earning a one-second lead by 500 meters, which they extended to a boat length by the midway point. California attempted to break away in the third quarter of the race, but Stanford battled back to retain contact, finishing just three seconds back. California crossed the line in 6:20.3 to Stanford's 6:23.3.
The II Eight race was also hotly contested, a dead heat in the start with Stanford ekeing out a lead of inches at the 500-meter mark. California battled back in the second 500 to get ahead by a half a boatlength. Stanford countered in the third 500 but couldn't close the gap as it's time of 6:33.1 was three-and-a-half seconds behind California's 6:29.5.
California claimed a 19-second win in the Four race, crossing the line in 7:20.4 to Stanford's 7:39.5. In the Novice Eight race, California's "A" boat won the race in 6:53.58 while Stanford's crew crossed the line in 7:15.05, edging California's "B" boat by a tenth of a second.
