Cardinal Shuts Out #13 Georgia

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The No. 17 Stanford softball team blanked No. 13 Georgia, Friday, at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Cardinal moves to 11-2 overall, while the Bulldogs dropped to 7-5.

Freshman pitcher Kelsey Stevens notched her fourth shutout of the year, improving to 6-1 in the circle. She had three strikeouts and gave up four hits against the Bulldogs. Georgia's Morgan Montemayor took the loss, dropping to 3-3.

Stanford scored its first run in the top of the second inning. A single by senior Tegan Schmidt and a throwing error by Georgia short stop Paige Wilson allowed freshman Kayla Bonstrom to score from second.

The Cardinal broke the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs and increasing its lead to 6-0. Freshman second baseman Kaitlin Schaberg drew a walk to lead off the inning. After a pitching change by the Bulldogs, Schmidt also drew a walk to put two runners on for Stanford. Sophomore Hanna Winter then hit an RBI single to centerfield, scoring pinch runner Tylyn Wells. A three-run homer for senior Sarah Hassman made it 5-0, and then another error by Wilson allowed senior Jenna Rich to score from second on a single by Erin Ashby.

Stanford will be back in action Friday night, taking on Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
