Sailing Fourth at Bob Bavier Team Race

Feb. 25, 2013

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford sailing team competed against some of the nation's best and earned fourth-place honors at the Bob Bavier Team Race hosted by College of Charleston last weekend at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

The field included several of the nation's top-ranked programs including Stanford, Georgetown, St. Mary's (Md.), Navy, Michigan, Yale, Eckerd College, South Florida, Miami (Fla.) and the host Cougars.

"The Bob Bavier Team Race is always a great event to see the top teams in the country go head-to-head," Stanford head coach John Vandemoer said. "We split our squad so that all of our top players get quality starts. For us to finish among the top four in each of the last two weekends shows the depth of our team race."

Stanford picked up wins in the first round robin over Eckerd, Miami, Michigan, Navy and St. Mary's. The Cardinal later defeated Navy in a final four qualifier.

The final four saw Stanford beat Georgetown and Yale while falling to College of Charleston.

The Cardinal tandems included Oliver Toole and Helena Scutt, Kieran Chung-Wolf and Tally Buckstaff, and Antoine Screve and Haley Kirk.

The Cardinal plays host to the McIntyre Race on March 2-3.
