HONOLULU - Steven Irvin had 22 kills, but was unable to prevent No. 3 Stanford from losing to Hawai'i, 20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 27-25, 15-11, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball action before 3,316 at the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday night.
Stanford (7-3 overall, 4-3 MPSF) had two match points in the fourth set, only for Hawai'i (4-7, 3-5) to fight off the Cardinal and use that momentum to bolt to a quick 4-1 lead in the fifth set that the Warriors would not relinquish.
One night after a hitting a career-high 27 kills, Irvin followed with another big night, hitting .372 and totaling 13 digs. Brian Cook had 16 kills, and setter James Shaw had 47 assists and 12 digs. However, the Cardinal hit a season-low .203 in the loss.
Stanford next plays host to UC Irvine on Friday at Burnham Pavilion at 6:30 p.m.
