Stanford Finishes Strong at Northwestern Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. - After a grueling first day of competition for both teams, the Stanford men's and women's fencing teams completed Sunday's slate at the Northwestern Duals with winning records.

The men's fencing team (10-3) went a perfect 5-0 on Sunday to finish the tournament with a 6-3 record.

Each weapon for Stanford finished with a winning record on the day, highlighted by the foil team's perfect 5-0 record. Epee (3-2) and sabre (4-1) also had strong showings on the second day of competition.

Stanford recorded victories over UC San Diego (15-12), Lawrence (24-3), Cleveland State (19-8), Detroit-Mercy (27-0) and North Carolina (16-11).

A total of 13 men qualified for the NCAA Western Regional tournament, including junior Turner Caldwell and freshman Alex Massialas who finished with regulars season records of 22-5 and 28-3, respectively.

The women's fencing team (11-6) went 5-1 Sunday, losing only to host No. 7 Northwestern (18-9). The Cardinal defeated Detroit-Mercy (23-4), Lawrence (21-4), UC San Diego (16-11), Fairleigh Dickenson (17-10), and Cleveland State (24-1). The women finished the tournament with a record of 7-5.

The epee and foil squads had outstanding days recording records of 6-0 and 5-1, respectively.

All 10 Stanford women's fencers qualified to the NCAA Western Regional tournament, led by Francesca Bassa and Vivan Kong who finished the season with records of 37-6 and 38-5, respectively.

The Stanford fencing team will have a month off before its next competition on March 9 at the NCAA Western Regional in San Diego, Calif.
