EVANSTON, Ill. - The Stanford men's and women's fencing teams completed a challenging first day at the Northwestern Duels on Saturday in Evanston, Ill.
The tenth-ranked men's fencing team (5-3) finished the day 2-3 after dropping decisions to No. 1 Ohio State (16-11), No. 3 Notre Dame (17-10) and No. 4 Princeton (16-11). Stanford recorded its two victories against Wayne State, 22-5 and Northwestern (25-2).
The foil team highlighted the day for men, posting an overall record of 4-1.
The women's fencing team (6-5) faced a daunting task Saturday, competing in six duels with four against top 10 opponents. The team finished 2-4, dropping each of its four matches against ranked opponents.
The women defeated Wayne State (14-13) and North Carolina (18-9) with the sabre team providing a standout 4-2 record.
Both teams will resume action on Sunday with the men's team competing in five duels, while the women will compete in six.
