Cardinal Trio Still Alive at NCAAs

DES MOINES, Iowa - All three Cardinal wrestlers won a match on the first day of the NCAA Championships, including an upset by redshirt freshman Evan Silver, at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Silver knocked off 11th-seeded Nikko Triggas of Ohio State in the first round at 125 pounds with a 5-2 decision. He secured a takedown in the third period and added back points to seal the win. The victory was his 26th of the season, moving him into sole possession of fifth place on the Cardinal's all-time freshman wins list.

In the second round, Silver fell to the six seed Nahshon Garrett of Cornell, 5-3. Garrett scored near fall points in the final 20 seconds of the match to seal the win. Silver will now face 5th-seeded Jarrod Garnett of Virginia Tech in the consolation bracket.

Junior Bret Baumbach dropped a 4-2 decision in overtime to eighth-seeded Nicholas Sulzer of Virginia at 165 pounds. He bounced back with a 14-6 major decision win over NC State's Nijel Jones in the consolation rounds. Baumbach, a native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, will square-off with Michael Moreno of Iowa State on Friday.

Junior heavyweight Dan Scherer also fell in his opening match on Thursday to No. 5 Michael McMullan of Northwestern, 6-2. He rebounded with a 4-1 decision over George Mason's Jacob Kettler in the consolation bracket. He is now 21-13 overall and will wrestle 6th-seeded Bobby Telford of Iowa in the next round.

The trio will be back on the mat on Friday, March 22 competing in the consolation brackets for a chance to become 2013 NCAA All-Americans.
