DAVIS, Calif. - Four Stanford pitchers combined to limit UC Davis to a pair of hits through eight innings but the host Aggies came through with a pair of runs on three hits in the ninth as the Cardinal suffered a 2-1 setback in non-conference baseball action Tuesday at Dobbins Stadium.

The short week continues for Stanford with three-game Pac-12 Conference series at Washington State (March 28-30).

A pair of Cardinal tossers shined in their debuts for Stanford (11-8), who has now lost three straight and six of its last seven after the defeat to the Aggies (10-12).

Stanford starter Freddy Avis got a trio of groundouts in the first and stayed perfect through two complete while making his collegiate debut. Avis hit his spots and used 20 pitches in the short work.

A.J. Vanegas made his season debut in the third and gave up UC Davis' first hit on the day, a soft one-out single up the middle. The Cardinal responded with an inning-ending double play.

Back-to-back doubles to start the first by Austin Slater and Wayne Taylor put the Cardinal in a good spot to take a 1-0 lead. Justin Ringo popped a sacrifice fly which Aggie centerfielder Evan Wolf fired to third to catch Taylor for the second out.

Dominic Jose smacked Stanford's third double with a two-bagger in the second. The Cardinal would finish with five hits.

Logan James fanned five of 16 batters faced in 4.2 innings of middle relief.

The Aggies got a runner on base in the eighth on a Cardinal error and Kevin Barker followed with a two-out double down the rightfield line. UC Davis held Cameron Olson at third as Slater's throw to the plate was on the money. Garrett Hughes (2-2) stepped in to face Spencer Brann, who James left with a 2-0 count. Hughes needed three pitches to get out of the inning.

Taylor added a leadoff single in the final frame and was left on third, which would prove pivotal. Taylor led Stanford with a 2-for-3 effort.

John Williams started the ninth with a leadoff triple which caromed over the head of Slater in right. Hughes got a pair of outs before a wild pitch scored Williams to tie the game at 1-1. Paul Politi singled, Steven Patterson drew a walk. Sam Lindquist replaced Hughes and surrendered a walk-off single to Nick Lynch, whose liner to second got by a diving Danny Diekroeger.

Evan Wolf gave up three hits and one earned run to start the game for the Aggies. The UC Davis bullpen tossed the remaining six innings and allowed one hit with Max Cordy (4-2) getting the win. Cordy threw a one-hit ninth.

Stanford struck out once.
