STANFORD, Calif.- No. 49 Stanford's four-match winning streak came to an end Friday afternoon in a 6-1 loss to No. 2 USC at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
In the Pac-12 opener for both teams, Stanford (7-6, 0-1 Pac-12) captured the doubles point before USC (18-2, 1-0 Pac-12) stormed back to sweep all six singles matches.
The Cardinal, which entered the match riding a season-high four-match win streak, fought hard early on during singles play before the Trojans eventually took control.
USC opened doubles with a victory on court two, before Stanford's Denis Lin and John Morrissey countered with an 8-3 triumph at the No. 1 spot. The Cardinal then snagged the doubles point when Nolan Paige and Trey Strobel booked an 8-5 win at No. 3.
After claiming victories at the top two spots of the lineup, USC clinched the match at the No. 5 position with Eric Johnson defeating Daniel Ho 6-4, 6-1.
Stanford hosts No. 4 UCLA (15-1, 1-0 Pac-12) tomorrow in the first-ever televised tennis match on the Pac-12 Networks. The doubles competition begins at 2:30 p.m., with the telecast joining in progress live at 4 p.m. and showcasing the singles matches on courts Nos. 1-3. Ted Robinson will handle play-by-play duties while Paul Goldstein, four-time All-American during his stellar Cardinal career from 1995-98, serves as the color analyst.
