HARRISONBURG, Va. - The 13th-ranked Stanford women's lacrosse team won its fourth consecutive game Saturday as it earned a 14-9 victory at No. 19 James Madison.
After trailing by two goals at halftime, Stanford (6-2, 1-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) outscored James Madison (6-1, 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association) 9-2 in the second half to claim the comeback victory.
The Cardinal was led by junior Rachel Ozer who tallied a season-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Her five goals are tied for the ninth most in a single game in Stanford history.
Ozer leads Stanford with 36 points on 24 goals and 12 assists on the season.
"She had some lasers for shots and was playing fearless, which was awesome," head coach Amy Bokker said.
Freshman Lucy Dikeou also provided strong offensive contributions, notching four goals, two ground balls and two draw controls. She is fourth on the team with 17 points (12-5).
"She definitely came out sharp in the first half," Bokker said. "She had such great speed and I thought she did a great job utilizing that throughout the entire game."
Stanford was strong on defense holding James Madison to 17 shots, including just six in the second half. The Cardinal also held a 15-10 advantage in draw controls.
Anna Kim and Emily Newstrom each picked up a team-high four draw controls, while Megan Lerner scooped up three to increase her team-leading total to 25. Junior goalkeeper Lyndsey Munoz made two saves.
After Dikeou tallied the first goal of the game, James Madison went on a 3-0 scoring run that lasted just under seven minutes. The run was halted when Dikeou scored her second on the day.
After trading a series of goals, Stanford got a goal from Ozer with just 17 seconds remaining in the first and entered halftime down 7-5.
The Cardinal came out strong in the second and opened the half with three consecutive goals from Dikeou, Ozer and Hannah Farr.
Stanford allowed just two goals in the second half and finished the game on a 4-0 scoring run.
"We stuck to our game plan and what we wanted to do," Bokker said. "Our players did a good job of knowing what we needed to do and making adjustments."
Stanford will return home for its second MPSF matchup of the season on Tuesday, April 2, at 5:00 p.m. (PT), when it takes on Fresno State.
