2013 Pac-12 Women's Challenge Sponsored By Recology Results

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - Stanford women's rowing opened the spring campaign with its top three crews nabbing wins in eight of nine races over the weekend at the Pac-12 Women's Challenge Sponsored By Recology.

: "It was a real pleasure to host Cal, Clemson, Northeastern, Oklahoma and Oregon State," said Stanford women's rowing head coach Yasemin Farooq. "The expansion of the NCAA Championships this year from 16 to 22 teams makes inter-conference competition extremely important. We're grateful to Clemson (ACC), Northeastern (Colonial) and Oklahoma (Conference USA) for making the trip to the Pac-12 to race us, and we were glad to hear that everyone enjoyed the excellent weather, fairness of the venue and quality officiating."

The event started Saturday morning with the Cardinal I and II Eights claiming wins over Clemson. The I Eight took a 10.3-second win while the II Eight defeated its Tiger counterpart by 4.1 seconds. The Tigers would pull a pair of wins back, capturing the Four race by 4.3 seconds and the Novice Eight race by a 7.9-second margin.

Stanford returned to the Redwood Shores water Saturday afternoon, sweeping the I Eight, II Eight and Four races against Northeastern. The Cardinal took the I Eight race by 20.1 seconds, netted a 16.0-second win in the II Eight event and beat the Northeastern Four by 9.2 seconds.

The Novice Eight took on California's Novice II Eight, finishing 3.4 seconds back.

The Cardinal ended the event Sunday morning by going 4-for-4 against Oklahoma. The I Eight opened the day with a 14.6-second win followed by the II Eight beating its Oklahoma counterpart by 6.7 seconds. The Four defeated the Sooners by 3.7 seconds and the Novice Eight got its first win of the weekend with a 4.8-second victory.

"This was our strongest season opener in my seven years at Stanford. All four of our boats raced really aggressively from stroke one of the first race," Farooq said. "Both the upperclassmen and freshman have made significant progress since we started up last September. The squad is significantly deeper this year and this was their first chance to put it to the test. Every lineup improved from the first race to the third, and the growth in the varsity four and novice eight was exponential. It was a really solid start and the focus team-wide was excellent. That said, it's the first weekend of racing. The squad knows there is solid work ahead. At the same time, they are pretty excited about the next round of cross-conference competition at the Lake Natoma Invitational in three weeks."
