Cardinal Cops Conference Crowns

April 10, 2013

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford won a pair of Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference events last weekend at the San Diego Yacht Club. The Cardinal took home the PCCSC team race and coed trophies. Even more, the Cardinal was third behind Boston College and Yale at the Jan Friis/Lynne Marchiando Team Race hosted by MIT in Boston.

"I'm very proud of the team as we had another solid weekend on both coasts," Stanford head coach John Vandemoer said. "The convincing wins at both conference championships was a real testament to the whole team's hard work. Sailing to a third-place finish in Boston against New England's best with our younger players shows that our depth, our future and our present are all very good.

"We have much more to sail for and we have more work to do before we reach our peak performance, but for this time of year, we are on track."

Stanford went undefeated at the PCCSC team race to advance to the ICSA Team Race Nationals which will be held late next month in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Cardinal went 10-0 behind the efforts of Kevin Laube, Carolyn Ortel, Mateo Vargas, Tally Buckstaff, Oliver Toole and Haley Kirk.

Hawaii (7-3) was second among the eight-team field vying for the Ford Trophy.

Stanford blew by the 12-team field in the coed championship with 41 points, far beyond second-place UC Santa Barbara (102). The Cardinal was first in both the A-Division (24) and B-Division (17). Kevin Laube, Mateo Vargas and Tally Buckstaff competed in the coed racing.

By claiming the Healy Trophy, Stanford qualified for the ICSA semifinals hosted by Old Dominion from April 27-28.

Yale (13-4) won the Jan Friis/Lynne Marchiando Team Race as Stanford went 10-7 for third. The Cardinal was represented by Kieran Chung-Wolf, Hans Henken, Antoine Screve, Yuri Namikawa, Rebecca King and Samantha Steele.
