STANFORD, Calif.- No. 41 Stanford dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to No. 7 Pepperdine on Wednesday afternoon at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Despite facing an early deficit, the Cardinal (8-9, 1-3 Pac-12) responded with strong efforts in singles play before the Waves (19-4, 5-0 WCC) ultimately took control of the match.
Pepperdine claimed the doubles point thanks to a deciding victory on court two, where Alex Sarkissian and Finn Tearney defeated Maciek Romanowicz and Robert Stineman 8-5.
Stanford quickly bounced back at the start of singles, receiving victories from its increasingly dependable back court contingent.
Competing in his first dual of the season, Denis Lin evened the match at 1-1 with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over David Sofaer at the No. 6 spot.
Minutes later, Trey Strobel put Stanford in front 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mousheg Hovhannisyan next door on court five. Strobel has won seven of his last 10 matches.
Pepperdine countered by sweeping all three matches inside the stadium, with Sarkissian edging Stineman 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 3 position to clinch the match.
In the final battle of the afternoon, Daniel Ho outlasted Francis Alcantara 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 to account for Stanford's third point.
Stanford, hosting the first tilt of a five-match homestand, next faces Arizona on Friday, April 12, at 1:30 p.m.
