LOS ANGELES, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford closed out its undefeated weekend in Los Angeles with a 10-2 win over No. 11 Loyola Marymount Sunday at Burns Aquatics Center.
The win upped Stanford's season-best winning streak to 13 games and improved the Cardinal to 25-1 overall. Stanford, expected to reassume the top spot in the CWPA Varsity Top 20 Poll this Wednesday, will close the regular season next Friday with a 5 p.m. MPSF contest at No. 5 California.
Sophomore Annika Dries, Melissa Seidemann and Maggie Steffens each scored twice and Anna Yelizarova added a goal.
In goal Kate Baldoni got the start and made three saves over the first half. Freshman Gabby Stone took over for the second half, stopping five shots and allowing just one goal to the Lions.
Goals from Dries, Steffens and Seidemann got the Cardinal out to a 3-0 lead by the 3:56 mark of the opening period before LMU got on the board behind a goal from Jessica Morelos.
The Cardinal broke the game open in the second period, scoring four times while its defense held the Lions scoreless to make it a 7-1 game at halftime. Neushul and Dries scored within the opening two minutes of the period to make it 5-1, and Seidemann's 6-on-5 goal made it 6-1 with just 2:12 elapsed in the frame. Steffens scored her second goal of the game with 3:41 to go before halftime.
Despite LMU's Alexandra Honny scoring the first goal of the second half, Stanford answered with a 3-0 run to end the game as Stone and the Cardinal defense killed off three of four 6-on-5 situations.
