Championship Match Final Notes

Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra became Stanford’s first NCAA Doubles Champion since the 1990 season, when Meredith McGrath and Teri Whitlinger captured the title … Kalvaria and Lastra won three of their five tournament matches in three-sets, with the final two contests coming via straight-sets … Kalvaria and Lastra conclude the 2002 season with a 34-3 overall mark, and won eight in a row and 21 of 22 to end the year … UCLA was shooting for its first NCAA Doubles Championship since the 1995 season … UCLA’s Megan Bradley and Lauren Fisher were unseeded in the tournament draw and upset three seeded teams to reach the final.

Championship Match Final Quotes

Gabriela Lastra, Stanford---

"This is incredible and just a dream come true. I wanted this so badly. I felt like we deserved this every year."

"I was confident in the fact that we had a tough draw in the tournament to get through to the final. I thought that if we were able to come out focused and play the way we did yesterday, we would have a good chance to win today."

Lauren Kalvaria, Stanford---

"I’ve been dreaming about this for four years so this is a long time coming. I was a little nervous out there today, but Gaby (Gabriela Lastra) was able to pull through in some big points."

"Once we were able to win the second game of the first set, everything was going well. I feel like I started off a little tight and we had a couple of match points in the first set where I was making errors. They are a young team and we have experience and know how to play in those situations."

"I’ll take the doubles title. A triple crown in this sport is almost unrealistic. I’m very happy with the way we were able to play this weekend and throughout the tournament."

Head Coach Lele Forood, Stanford---

"I’m so ecstatic for Gaby and Lauren. They got to finish their college careers as doubles champions. They deserve it so much and have played great doubles all four years. They have a lot of faith in one other and are such good friends off the court that they want to win for each other, and that’s the most important thing. "

Lauren Fisher, UCLA---

"They’re a great team and they played well. We didn’t play as well as we wanted to and you have to be on your game to beat them."

Semifinal Notes---

Saturday’s NCAA Doubles Final will begin one hour after the conclusion of the singles title match, scheduled for noon … The doubles final will feature top-seeded seniors Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra of Stanford against unseeded UCLA’s sophomore Lauren Fisher and freshman Megan Bradley … The two teams have yet to face off against each other this season … Kalvaria and Lastra defeated No. 3 seed Jessica Lehnhoff and Lindsay Dawaf of Florida 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals on Friday evening, while Bradley and Fisher topped Kentucky’s Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten 7-6 (2), 6-2 in the other semi … Kalvaria and Lastra are bidding to become Stanford’s first doubles champion since 1990 … The Bruins have had not had a doubles champion since 1995, when Keri Phebus and Susie Starrett captured the crown … Kalvaria and Lastra have won seven matches in a row and 20 of their last 21 … Kalvaria and Lastra are 33-3 overall this season, while Bradley and Fisher are 35-6 … UCLA’s Fisher teamed with Petya Marinova to reach the quartefinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships last season; the duo was defeated 7-6, 2-6, 6-1by Stanford’s Gabriela Lastra and Laura Granville.

Semifinal Quotes---

Megan Bradley, UCLA ---

"I think we played real well today. We were able to do what we wanted out there and our execution improved once the second set began. When we are playing at our best, we are a tough team to beat."

Head coach Stella Sampras, UCLA ---
"They started out slow today, going down 4-2 in the first set. The tiebreaker was important because it allowed our team to get off to a good start and carry that momentum into the second set. Our girls did really well today against a tough team."

Lauren Kalvaria, Stanford ---
"You can’t ask for anything better than this. We’ve got just one more match to go and hopefully we can do it. It’s nice to be able to do it on our home court and in front of our crowd that has been so supportive."

"We had a tough draw that prepared us well for this match. All of our matches before this had gone three sets, so this was nice to be able to win it like this."

Gabriela Lastra, Stanford ---

"We had played them (Dawaf and Lehnhoff) twice already this season and both sides got one win, so we knew we had to come out hard and stay focused on what we wanted to do."

"Bradley and Fisher are a very good doubles team. We actually never matched up with them this year because they are UCLA’s No. 2 team, but they could just as easily have played No. 1 doubles."

Quarterfinal Notes ---
Three of the top four seeded teams advanced to the semifinals … Top-seeded Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra won their third three set match in two days by outlasting Claire Carter and Darija Klaic of Washington 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-2 … Florida’s Lindsay Dawaf/Jessica Lehnhoff, who are seeded third in the tournament, knocked off Sarah Riske/Aleke Tsoubanos of Vanderbilt 6-4, 6-3 … Fourth-seeded Carolina Mayorga/Sarah Witten of Kentucky, who advanced to the quarterfinals last year, advanced to the semis for the first time with a three-set win over Stanford’s Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette … UCLA’s Megan Bradley/Lauren Fisher, who are not seeded, advanced with a three-set win over Hillary Adams/Kelly McCain of Duke … UCLA is looking for its first NCAA Doubles Championship since 1995 … Two of the eight players still remaining – Lastra and Lehnhoff – reached the 2001 NCAA Doubles Final … In that match, Florida’s Whitney Laiho and Lehnhoff beat Stanford’s Laura Granville and Lastra 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 … Both the Pacific-10 and Southeastern conference advanced two teams to Friday’s semifinals … The semis, which will begin following the 12:00 p.m. (PT) singles semifinals, will match Kalvaria/Lastra vs. Dawaf/Lehnhoff and Mayorga/Witten vs. Bradley/Fisher.

Debbie Larocque/Maja Mlakar of Arizona and Petya Marinova/Sara Walker ? of UCLA were eliminated in the opening round … Top seeds Lauren Kalvaria/Gabriela Lastra from Stanford rallied from a 4-6, 1-4, deficit to win the final 11 games.
