Junior Missy Penna (Miami, Fla./Southwest HS) of the Stanford softball team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 5-May 11.

In one thrilling night, Penna struck out a school-record 17 batters, broke the school's single-season strikeout record, matched Stanford's single-season win record and carried the team to a 2-1, ten-inning upset of No. 2/2 Arizona State in Tempe. Penna (34-10) earned her league-leading 34th win of the year in the upset, matching Dana Sorensen's single-season win record from 2004. Her 17 K's bested the previous single-game record of 16 set by herself (2007) and Sorensen (2001), and moved her past the school's single-season strikeout record to a new mark of 370. With the lead in the bottom of the tenth and nearly 200 pitches to her name, she struck out the side for the third time in the game, fanning all three Sun Devils that came to bat. Penna completed the Pac-10 season having pitched more innings than any other pitcher in the league, including 18 complete games in conference play.

This is Penna's second Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of 2007-08. The Cardinal meets Lehigh on Friday at 2:30 p.m. (ET) in the Amherst Regional to begin the NCAA Tournament

Also nominated: Jacquelyn Gauthier (Women's Water Polo), Carolyn McVeigh (Women's Tennis), Angela King (Women's Golf), Brent Milleville (Baseball).
