Getting To Know Dylan Carney
Parents:Jay and Vija Carney
Major:Undeclared
Nickname:Sometimes people call me Dyran or Die-lan, but that's usually just Sho
The best thing about Stanford is:The people. Everybody here is interesting, unique and exceptional - it's an honor to live, study and get to be friends with them.
My favorite place on campus is:The Clark Center
Ten years from now I hope to be:A doctor, working towards a practical solution to a public health issue, happy, wealthy enough to donate something back to the Stanford Gymnastics program, educating others, still in touch with my Stanford friends and teammates
My favorite class at Stanford:Human Behavioral Biology by Professor Robert Sapolsky
Favorite thing to do on an off day:Watch a movie at a movie theater
Something people would be surpised to know about me:I'm scared of heights; highbar is fine, but standing at the edge of a tall building and rock climbing scare me.
The place I would most like to visit:India
My favorite pre-meet rituals are:Visualization
Earliest sporting memory:Jumping (flipping) off the 20-foot balcony at my club gym onto a 3-foot matt. My mom walked in mid fall and immediately told me if I ever did that again she'd pull me from the sport. Needless to say, I never did that again.
Stanford Men's Gymnastics will be fun to watch this year because:We have 18 extremely talented and hardworking gymnasts vying for 12 spots on the competition floor, we were ranked 1st in the preseason poll, a couple of our guys will undoubtedly be going to Beijing, and this is the beginning of what will be a long winning streak for Stanford gymnastics.
My greatest athletic moment was:Nailing my high bar set at the 2006 NCAA Team Finals to help our team finish 3rd, as well as qualifying for individual event finals and bringing my teammate, Eli, to tears.
The athlete I admire most:Dan Gill, captain of the team my freshman year
The current or former Stanford athlete I most enjoying watching perform:Cassidy Krug (current diver)
Best Stanford moment:Driving down Palm Drive on my visit to Stanford and knowing instantly that I belonged here. Finishing my last final exam of my freshman year and feeling the relief of knowing that I'd made it through the hardest part. Studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa and Bahia de los Angeles, Mexico, with some awesome classmates and great professors. And finally, every time I get to compete for my school is a pretty great moment.
Since coming to Stanford, I have learned:How to challenge myself, and how to handle challenging situations
The best book I have ever read:The Fountainhead (Ayn Rand), House of God (Samuel Shem), Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers (Robert Sapolsky), Better and Complications (Atul Gawande)
Favorite Food:Chicken or Spinach
Least Favorite Food:All Shellfish
If I had to cook all of my meals, I'd probably survive on:Burnt break-n-bake cookies
My favorite TV show:Grey's Anatomy or Nip/Tuck
Favorite Actor/Actress:Kevin Spacey/Scarlett Johannsen
My favorite musical group:I like all music - really
The best advice I ever received was:Lift with your legs, not with your back.
The person or people who have had the greatest influence in my career:My parents: for always encouraging me and supporting my decisions in the sport. My coaches: for teaching me everything I know about gymnastics. Other non-gymnast Stanford athletes: for always pushing the envelope and raising the bar for all athletes here at Stanford. And finally, my teammates: for their motivation, support and friendship.
If I could invite three people to dinner in history, they would be:Mahatma Gandhi, Charles Darwin and Jesus
I'd like to switch places for a day with:The President
My advice to youngsters:Always challenge yourself, even if it scares you.
If I could bring anything from my hometown to Stanford it would be:My family
If I had one CD to listen to it would be:Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane
One wish I would make for the 21st century:I'd like everyone on earth to be educated at the college level, especially in math, science and economics. I think that if this ever happens, then the solutions to many other substantial problems will soon follow.
