At Stanford: A first round selection in the 2000 June Major League Baseball Draft, Joe Borchard enters the season as one of the top two-sport athletes in the nation...He has already established himself as a premiere college baseball player and 2000 may be the year he makes his mark in football as well...He is the leading candidate to become the Cardinal's starting quarterback this season...A backup QB the past two years, Borchard is one of only a few athletes to play in both the Rose Bowl (2000) and College World Series (1999, 2000)...The Chicago White Sox made him their first round selection last June (12th pick overall)...Two-time All-Pac-10 in baseball, Borchard earned national recognition last year in football by throwing for 324 yards and five TDs vs. UCLA, earning him National Player of the Week honors...He still has two years of eligibility remaining in football.

The 1999 Season: Was very impressive as the Cardinal's No. 2 signal caller...Appeared in 10 games, including a start against San Jose State in place of an injured Husak...For the season, completed 42-of-71 passes for 747 yards and seven touchdowns...Led the Pac-10 with a 177.3 pass efficiency rating, but did not have enough attempts to qualify for the national statistics...He made national headlines after his performance against UCLA in a relief role...After Husak left the game with bruised ribs early in the second quarter, Borchard came on and promptly completed 15-of-19 for 324 yards and five touchdowns...He was named USA Today's National Player of the Week for his effort...The five TD passes in a game tied Borchard with several others for the second most in school history...He also had a 56-yard run vs. the Bruins...The following week, with Husak sidelined, Borchard made his starting debut against San Jose State...He threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns on 19-of-37...Also had a 26-yard scramble against the Spartans...Went 4-of-4 for 51 yards against Notre Dame...Fifth on the team in rushing with 30 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown.

The 1998 Season: Played in seven games as a backup quarterback...Completed 21-of-48 for 317 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions...Also had 27 rushing attempts for 82 net yards...Showed the ability to make the big play...Instrumental in helping Stanford to a 37-34 win over North Carolina...He entered the game with less than a minute to play in the fourth quarter after starting QB Todd Husak went out with an injury...Borchard promptly scrambled 41 yards to the UNC four-yard line to set up the winning field goal...The 41-yard rush was the longest by a Stanford player in the '98 season...Against Arizona State, he completed four-of-eight passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns, including a 28-yard TD pass to Troy Walters in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 31-31...He played the entire second half against Washington State, completing eight-of-19 for 162 yards and one TD...That TD was an 80-yard pass play to Walters, which tied for the eighth longest TD pass play in school history...Winner of the Menlo-Atherton Award as the team's top freshman.
