International Competition Highlights: On December 18-19, 2009, broke the world record in both the shortcourse 200 (2:04.60) and 400 IMs (4:21.04) at the Duel in the Pool in England... reached the World Aquatic Championships in Rome in July, 2009 after setting an American record in the 200 IM (2:09.34) after racing to a best of 2:10.54 in the preliminaries... in Italy, just missed qualifying for the finals, finishing two-tenths of a second from qualifying (2:10.29) for the eight-person final... was seventh in the heats with a time of 2:10.94... also swam in the 4x100 relay with Stanford teammate Kate Dwelley, where she helped the Americans to a fourth place finish in the prelims and 10th in the finals, swimming the anchor leg with a time of 54.15... was sixth in the 400 IM at Worlds with a personal-best 4:35.33, after swimming in the prelims fastest sectional with Olympians Stephanie Rice and Elizabeth Beisel... Smit swam 4:35.84 in the 400 IM prelims, third to those fellow Olympians... finished second in the 400 IM at the U.S. Trials, posting a time of 4:36.73 for a silver medal, after the top preliminary time (4:40.27)... finished fourth in the finals of the 100 free (54.38) ahead of teammate Kate Dwelley... In 2008-09 was the only active collegiate swimmer to win two medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, earning silver in the 400-meter free relay and bronze in the 800 meter free relay...did not participate in either event final, but swam key legs in both preliminaries...helped the U.S. to the third seed in the 400 relay final with a time of 54.73, while she swam the anchor leg of the 800 relay as the Americans posted a heat-winning time of 7:52.43...was the only swimmer at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials to finish in the top six in both the 100- and 200-meter free...was sixth in the 100 free (54.99), third in the 200 free (1:56.73), third in the 400 IM (4:35.73) and 18th in the 200 back (2:13.89)...tallied four top-10 finishes in the 200 IM, four in the 200 back, three in the 400 IM and two in the 100 back at Summer Senior Nationals between 2003-07...won the 200 back at the 2006 Spring Senior Nationals, while placing second in the 100 back, third in the 400 IM and eighth in the 200 IM won four gold medals and a silver at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil...won the 100-meter backstroke, the 200 IM, the 400 free relay and the 400 medley relay...also earned silver in the 200 back...had three runner-up finishes at the 2006 FINA World Cup, finishing second in the 200 back, the 200 IM and the 400 IM...also finished second in both the 200 IM and 400 IM, along with third in the 200 back, at the 2005 World Cup...competed in her first World Cup in 2004, finishing second in the 400 IM...was a member of the 2004 U.S. Junior National Team...competed with her American teammates at the 2004 Queensland State Championships, where she won the 400 IM...finished third at that meet in the 200 IM and fifth in the 200 free... also competed in the 2004 and 2005 Spring Senior Nationals...finished sixth in the 200 IM at the 2006 World Championship trials...had a trio of top-ten finishes at the 2005 World Championship Trials (sixth in the 200 back, sixth in the 400 IM and seventh in the 200 IM)...made a pair of finals at the 2004 Olympic Trials, finishing seventh in the 400 IM and eighth in the 200 IM.

Stanford in 2009-10 (Senior): Honda Award winner for swimming, joining teammate Elaine Breeden as two of four finalists... NCAA and Pac-10 Championships Swimmer of the Meet... Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year... first team Academic All-American and first team Academic All-District XIII... seven-time All-American and NCAA Champion in the 200 and 400 IM and 400 Free Relay... Pac-10 Champion in the 200 and 400 IM as well as the 200 backstroke and 200 and 400 free relays... named the Pac-10's Swimmer of the Month all four months, the first ever swimmer to do that... broke her own American, NCAA, Pac-10, and school-records in the 200 IM and 400 IM at the Pac-10 Championships, setting the standard to 4:00.90 in the 400 IM for her third conference title and 1:52.31 in the 200 IM, doing so in the preliminaries... set the school-record, her fifth, in the 200 backstroke, first in Long Beach, breaking Misty Hyman's 11-year old record (1:53.12) and then lowering it to 1:50.76 at the Pac-10s...
Stanford in 2008-09 (Junior): Was one of four finalists for the Honda Sports Award, given to the women's top collegian in each sport... named an All-American seven times during her junior year, earning a certificate for the third time in the 200 and 400 individual medleys, 800 free relay and 400 medley relay... was an All-American for the second time in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays... earned her first honor in the 100 freestyle... won the 400 individual medley title for the second-straight year, while also taking home the 200 IM title at the NCAAs... set the American, NCAA and U.S. Open record in the 200 IM (1:52.79), breaking her own best by .32 seconds at NCAAs... a day later won the 400 IM, setting the same three marks with a time of 4:00.62, the first repeat champion in the event since 2003... then finished third in the 100 free with a time of 47.64, two-tenths of a second off her school-record pace in the prelims (47.44)... also won the Pac-10's individual crown in the 200 and 400 IM, setting the American, U.S. Open and NCAA record in the 200 IM (1:53.77) and NCAA record in the 400 IM (4:01.56)... ranked third in the NCAA in the 100 (47.44), sixth in the 50 free (21.91), ninth in the 200 free (1:43.56), and 11th in the 200 backstroke (1:52.88)... part of school-record 800 relay team at the Pac-10 Championships... part of Stanford-record 400 relay team at Pac-10s... also a part of the school-record 200 relay team at NCAAs.
Stanford in 2007-08 (Sophomore): NCAA champion in the 400 IM with a pool-record setting time of 4:02.41, which was the second-fastest time in Stanford history...became the first Cardinal swimmer to win a national title in the 400 IM since Summer Sanders captured back-to-back crowns in 1991 and 1992...also finished fourth in the 200 IM, but broke her own school record with a time of 1:55.31...placed seventh in the 200 back (1:54.94)...helped the Cardinal to third in the 400 medley relay (3:33.77), a tie for fourth in the 800 free relay (7:04.83) and fifth in the 400 free relay with a school-record 3:13.77...logged a second-place finish in the 200 IM at the Pac-10 Championships with a time of 4:08.09...placed third in the 200 IM (1:57.03), third in the 200 back (1:57.02) and second in the 800 free relay (7:05.70)...logged the second-fastest 200 free time in Stanford history (1:44.52) and the sixth-best 500 free ledger (4:41.74) during a Feb. 16 meet against California.
Stanford in 2006-07 (Freshman): Had a prolific freshman season on The Farm...was a six-time All-American, a three-time Pac-10 champion and the Pac-10's Newcomer of the Year...at her first NCAA Championships experience, finished second in the 200 back with a time of 1:53.39 - the second-best mark in Stanford history...also finished third in the 200 IM (1:56.43), third in the 400 IM (4:06.10), third in the 400 medley relay (3:34.86), fifth in the 200 free relay (1:29.57) and seventh in the 800 free relay (7:09.50)...dominated at the Pac-10 Championships with three titles and a trio of additional top-three finishes...won the 200 IM with a school-record 1:55.38, breaking Summer Sanders' 15-year-old standard of 1:55.54...also won the 400 IM in 4:04.02 and the 200 back at 4:04.02...finished second in the 200 free relay (1:29.48), third in the 400 free relay (3:17.70) and third in the 800 free relay (7:06.59).
High School, Club and Personal Data: Graduated from Mt. Sinai (N.Y.)
