Harry Wilfred Maloney served Stanford athletics in more capacities than anyone else by coaching seven varsity sports for a combined tenure of more than 75 seasons. He was Stanford’s first varsity coach in men’s basketball, boxing, fencing and men’s soccer. Maloney also coached rugby, track and field (1920) and wrestling (1921-22). His first basketball team played outdoors before Encina Gym was built. He has the longest tenure of any Stanford men’s soccer coach, coaching for 29 seasons between 1912-43. His 104 soccer coaching victories (104-60-40 overall) remain No. 2 all-time at Stanford. Maloney went 49-38-2 in 22 seasons as the fencing coach between 1916-40. He coached boxing from 1916-37 for 19 seasons. As the California Rugby Union president, he was selected the 1920 Olympic gold-medal-winning rugby team, featuring Stanford greats Dan Carroll and Dink Templeton. He conducted Harry Maloney’s Saturday Morning Boys’ Class for more than 25 years for children of faculty and staff in an era when sports camps were unheard of. As great as his coaching legacy, his contributions in the P.E. department were significant. |
