Top-Ranked Stanford Defeats Slovakian Nationals, 81-61
STANFORD, Calif. -- Junior forward Olympia Scott (Los Angeles, CA) scored ateam-high 15 points including 11 in the first half, to lead the No. 1ranked Stanford Cardinal to an 81-61 exhibition win over the SlovakiaBratislava National team on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion.
Scott's11 first-half points, together with 11 from junior Naomi Mulitauaopele(Seattle, WA) helped the Cardinal to a 48-32 half-time lead. Stanfordnever trailed and led by as many as 23 in the first-half (40-17) with5:30 left to play before the intermission.
The Cardinal had four playersin double figures, with Mulitauaopele scoring 14, and seniorAll-American Kate Starbird (Tacoma, WA) and redshirt junior VanessaNygaard (Carlsbad, CA) with 11 each. Nygaard also grabbed a game-high 11rebounds.
Beata Renertova led the Slovakia Bratislava National Team with20 points who trailed by 16 at the half but pulled to within 11 at onepoint in the second half.
Stanford's next game will be this Sundaymorning at 11:30 am against the No. 2 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in thefirst game of the State Farm Classic at Stanford's Maples Pavilion. Thatgame will be shown live on ESPN. No. 5 Connecticut and No. 8 WesternKentucky will square off at 2:00 pm on Sunday following the Stanfordgame. That game will be shown live on ESPN2.
