No. 21 Stanford Wins Third Straight Over Sun Devils, 81-65
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tim Young had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Kris Weems added 14 points as number 21 Stanford opened its Pac-10 Conference schedule with its seventh straight victory, an 81-65 triumph over Arizona State.
Mid-season transfer Mike Batiste scored 25 points and Eddie House added 14 for Arizona State (7-5), which spoiled coach Bill Frieder's 500th career game. The Sun Devils have lost three of their last four games.
"We got off to a good start, but towards the middle of the first half, we lost our concentration and our defense broke down a little bit," said Young. "I rushed shots early, then took a lot of high-percentage shots and made some layups."
Stanford (8-1) stormed to a 23-6 lead, as Young scored six points and Ryan Mendez, who had 13 points and eight boards, capped the run with 11:27 left with the first of his three three-pointers.
After Weems' bucket gave the Cardinal a 29-14 lead with 7:14 left in the half, the Sun Devils went on a 16-6 run. Batiste netted two from three-point range and "Gee" Gervin also made a three-pointer.
The Sun Devils twice pulled within eight points in the second half, but Stanford's Peter Sauer, who had 13 points and seven rebounds, answered both times with jumpers. Arizona State never got any closer.
"We got off to a really good start," said Stanford coach Mike Montgomery. "Guys were ready to play and charged up about the conference opener. Road wins are going to be a real premium. This was a game we thought we could win if we played well. You don't want to play crummy here, then go down to Arizona."
All-American guard Brevin Knight struggled for Stanford, scoring just nine points, including seven free throws.
Arizona State leading scorer Jeremy Veal was held to just two points on 1-of-9 shooting as the team continues to recover from the loss of Quincy Brewer, who is out with torn ligaments in his thumb after averaging 15 points and seven rebounds in his first eight games.
"You can't spot anyone that kind of lead to start the game," said Frieder, whose overall record fell to 320-180. "You have to come ready to play. Our main problem is that we don't have the competition in practice we need. We are missing some people and that hurts when you try to have intensity in practice. We need to have more guys step up and keep working."
Stanford shot 46 percent (27-for-58) from the field, including 8-of-22 from three-point range, and outrebounded Arizona State, 45-33. The Sun Devils made 40 percent (27-for-67) of its shots and went 3-of-10 from the free throw line.
Stanford has won three straight against Arizona State, but the Sun Devils lead all-time series, 24-18.
