No. 21 Cardinal Holds Off Late Rally to Defeat San Diego, 72-70

SAN DIEGO -- Kris Weems scored a career-high 18 points as number 21 Stanford survived a scare and held off San Diego, 72-70.

Weems, a sophomore guard, had to pick up the slack for backcourt mate Brevin Knight, who was limited to 20 minutes because of foul trouble. Knight had 15 points and six assists.

Stanford (4-1) had a 10-point lead in the final two minutes, but San Diego (3-4) scored 10 of the game's final 12 points as the Cardinal faltered from the foul line down the stretch.

Sean Flannery scored 19 points for the Toreros, who were looking for their second win in as many all-time meetings with Stanford. San Diego beat the Cardinal, 79-70, in overtime in 1980.

The Toreros suffered their fourth loss in five games due mainly to a 2-for-19 (11 percent) effort from three-point range. San Diego shot 54 percent (21-of-39) from inside the arc.

In addition to Knight, the Cardinal played most of the game without center Tim Young, who was limited to 12 minutes before fouling out with two points and three rebounds.

Stanford missed 10 of 28 foul shots after entering the game hitting 83 percent of its free throws.
